On May 17th, Saltley Academy hosted the launch of a Warwickshire County Cricket project to encourage more girls to play cricket, with the focus on ‘Cricket in the Dark.’ The Academy was also a stop-off point on a national tour of the both the ICC Women’s World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy, which are being competed for in England this summer.
While a number of students and staff had their photos taken with the trophies, the highlight was the cricket itself. The 30 girls from Years 8 and 9 were coached by a leading Warwickshire coach and a member of the Bears Women’s 1st XI.
Having had a series of fielding, bowling and batting drills, which the girls entered into with great enthusiasm, the real fun began when the main lights were switched off and the girls put on their glowing items, playing cricket with a glowing ball, bat and stumps.
The enjoyment of the girls was clear to see for all, including Mr York and Mr Tailor from our governing body, and we look forward to taking this concept further.
Sincere thanks to Mr Spiers and Ms Sidney and to the site staff for preparing the hall.
